What's left behind the scenes

  • Felicity Jones, Imogen Poots, Alison Brie, Mila Kunis, Olivia Wilde, Emma Watson, Rachel McAdams, Zooey Deschanel, Kat Dennings, Jennifer Lawrence, Lindsay Lohan, Alice Eve, Amanda Seyfried, and Evan Rachel Wood were considered for the role of Harley Quinn.
  • Cara Delevingne was the frontrunner for the role of Harley Quinn, but Margot Robbie ultimately landed the part. Delevingne was then cast as Enchantress.
  • Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, and Octavia Spencer were candidates for the role of Amanda Waller. The role went to Viola Davis.
  • It was planned that Deathstroke would appear in the film in a small cameo. Joe Manganiello was considered for this role.
  • Luke Evans, Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Cruise, Joel Edgerton, Jon Bernthal, and Jake Gyllenhaal were considered for the role of Rick Flag.
  • In the comics, Deadshot is Latino, not African American, as depicted in the film.
  • Most of the actors involved in the film, including Will Smith and Margot Robbie, got a "SKWAD" tattoo as a sign of their involvement in the project.
  • The film is released on the 50th anniversary of the Joker's debut in cinema. Cesar Romero played the role in the "Batman" television series (1966-1968) and the film of the same name by Leslie H. Martinson (1966).
  • Jared Leto became so immersed in the role of the Joker that he didn't break character even off-set. Leto sent "gifts" to other actors, very much in the spirit of his character: Margot Robbie received a rat, Will Smith – bullets, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje – an old issue of "Playboy" and a dead pig, while the rest of the cast and crew received beads and used condoms. Scott Eastwood repeatedly admitted that Leto's behavior sometimes frightened him.
  • Due to the film's dark atmosphere, a specially hired psychiatrist was constantly on call on set.
  • Preparing for the role of Deadshot, Will Smith shaved his head and trained with special forces units of the US Navy and Army. The training included regular visits to a shooting range, where the actor fired a "Glock" pistol and a "AR-15" semi-automatic rifle. Will Smith proved to be a good shooter, especially with a rifle at long distances.
  • Tom Hardy was initially cast as Rick Flag, but he left the project to film Alejandro González Iñárritu's "The Revenant" (2015). In Christopher Nolan's action film "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012), Hardy played Bane, who in the comics was a former member of the Suicide Squad. Hardy later admitted that he regretted not being able to star in "Suicide Squad".
  • Ben Affleck was the first actor to play Batman in two films directed by different directors, and to play Batman in two films released in the same year.
  • Ryan Gosling was the first actor offered the role of the Joker. It is claimed that he turned down the role because he did not want to sign a contract with the studio for several films at once.
  • The "Jokermobile", or the Joker's car, is a custom-made Infiniti G35 Vaydor.
  • The third screen adaptation of the Suicide Squad after appearances in the television series "Smallville" (2001) and "Arrow" (2012).
  • Actor Jared Leto borrowed traits of the Joker's character from Grant Morrison's graphic novel "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth" (DC Comics, 1989). There, he is an extraordinary personality, capable of unsettling and throwing off balance on one hand, and captivating on the other. The actor also cited gospel music, shamans, and Mexican drug cartels as factors that influenced his vision of the character.
  • Director and screenwriter David Ayer revealed Jared Leto's portrayal of the Joker on April 24, 2015, on the character's 75th anniversary.
  • The baseball bat used in the film from Harley Quinn's arsenal was gifted to Kevin Smith for discussing Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016) on the "Spoilers" film news program. Smith gave it to his daughter Harley Quinn Smith, named after the comic book supervillain from DC Comics.
  • Jared Leto attended the international "Comic Con" festival in New York in 2015 incognito and even took a picture with a fan dressed as the Joker.
  • The third film set in the expanded DC Universe, following Zack Snyder's 'Man of Steel' (2013) and 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016).
  • The first film based on comics to feature a team of supervillains as the main characters.
  • Emma Roberts turned down the offer to play Harley Quinn in order to participate in the filming of the television series 'Scream Queens' (2015).
  • Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Daniel Craig, Matthew McConaughey, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Keanu Reeves, Oscar Isaac, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Matt Damon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Alexander Skarsgård, Ewan McGregor, Robert Pattinson, Michael Fassbender, Joel Kinnaman, and John Hamm were all considered for the role of Deadshot.
  • The trailer for 'Suicide Squad' (2016) garnered more views in its first three weeks of release than both trailers for Zack Snyder's 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016).
  • Jai Courtney once said that he would never, under any circumstances, appear in films based on comics. Regarding his participation in the filming of "Suicide Squad," he changed his mind when he learned that David Ayer would be the director.
  • When auditioning for the role of Enchantress, Cara Delevingne read excerpts from Edward Albee's play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" She was asked to read them several times, each time differently, to assess the actress's ability to convey the dual personality of June Moon. By the end of the audition, Delevingne was ready to attack the director with her fists. "David Ayer made me so angry that I was afraid to do something and end up in jail," the actress later said.
  • In Francis Lawrence's "I Am Legend," starring Will Smith, a poster of a non-existent film, "Batman vs Superman," hangs on the wall. The plot of Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" unfolds in the same cinematic universe as the plot of David Ayer's "Suicide Squad."
  • Filming took place in June 2015 in Toronto, Canada, the administrative center of the province of Ontario. The film was shot under the code name "Bravo 14."
  • Writer and producer Paul Dini, who created the character of the supervillain Harley Quinn (she first appeared in the animated series "Batman" in 1992), stated that in the film, this heroine is, in his opinion, very "promisingly" portrayed.
  • In the comics published by DC Comics and Marvel Comics, Enchantress is depicted as a sorceress who prefers green clothing. The filmmakers wanted this character to be portrayed differently, so she more closely resembles Galadriel from the films about Middle-earth.
  • Blake Lively declined the offer to play Enchantress. Among the actresses considered for the role were Brie Larson, Saoirse Ronan, Megan Fox, Elliot Page, Kristen Ritter, Emma Stone, Alicia Vikander, Shailene Woodley, Emilia Clarke, and Alexandra Daddario.
  • The film's cast includes three Academy Award winners (Jared Leto, Ben Affleck, Common, also known as Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr.) and two nominees (Viola Davis and Will Smith).
  • The first trailer for the film Suicide Squad was shown at the annual international Comic Con festival on July 11, 2015. Initially, Warner Brothers resisted and rejected the idea of showing the trailer to a wide audience, but after a few days, they nevertheless agreed to its release.
  • The character Captain Boomerang, played by Jai Courtney, appears in the television series Arrow (2012), where the role is played by Nick E. Tarabay. Courtney and Tarabay previously starred together in the television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010).
  • Clint Eastwood, Scott Eastwood's father, was supposed to play Two-Face in the film "Batman" (Leslie H. Martinson, 1966), but at some point the producers decided to do without this character.
  • The songs featured in the trailer – “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen and “Ballroom Blitz” by Sweet – are also featured on the soundtrack to Penelope Spheeris’s eccentric comedy “Wayne’s World” (1992).
  • Cara Delevingne prepared for the role of Enchantress by listening to rock compositions by Nick Cave and Megadeth before filming.
  • The John F. Ostrander building in the film is named after John Ostrander, the creator of the modern version of “Suicide Squad”.
  • The first film set in the expanded "DC Comics" universe that was not directed by Zack Snyder.
  • This is the second film featuring Will Smith and Margot Robbie together, following the crime tragicomedy "Focus" (Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, 2015).
  • Generally, getting into the required physical shape for filming is not easy; it's a laborious and lengthy process. Jared Leto had to bulk up for the role of the Joker. However, the actor was already in excellent physical condition, so his training took only two months.
  • Jared Leto and Christian Bale starred together in the crime drama "American Psycho" (Mary Harron, 2000). Subsequently, Bale played Batman in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy (2005, 2008, 2012), and Leto was cast as the Joker in "Suicide Squad" (2016).
  • Charlto Copley and Matt Smith were considered for the role of the Joker.
  • This is the first film not about Batman to feature the Joker.
  • With the film's release, Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith will become the first married couple to play villains from Batman films – respectively in "Suicide Squad" (2016) and the television series "Gotham" (2014). It should be noted that Jada Pinkett Smith's character was created specifically for the series, while Will Smith's character was established in the comics.
  • To get into the role of her character Amanda Waller, actress Viola Davis read M. Thomas's autobiographical novel "Confessions of a Sociopath".
  • At 180 centimeters tall, Jared Leto became the third tallest Joker in history. Before him, this role was played by Jack Nicholson (177), Heath Ledger (185), and Cesar Romero (191).
  • Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje did extensive work before filming, reading everything that had been written about his character Killer Croc over the decades since his first appearance in the comics. Moreover, the actor studied crocodile behavior and researched the phenomenon of cannibalism.
  • Jim Parrack became the sixth member of the cast of the television series "True Blood" (2008-2014) to appear in a superhero comic book adaptation. Anna Paquin starred in the "X-Men" franchise; Kevin Alejandro and Rutina Wesley played in the television series "Arrow" (2012); Joe Manganiello starred in "Spider-Man" (Sam Raimi, 2002); and Deborah Ann Woll starred in the television series "Daredevil" (2015).
  • Margot Robbie was born two years before her character Harley Quinn first appeared in the animated series "Batman" (1992-1995), after which the character was adapted into the comics.
  • The trailer for the film, shown at the annual international "Comic-Con" festival, featured an arrangement of The Bee Gees' song "I Started A Joke".
  • At one point, it was claimed that Callan Mulvey would play the role of the Joker in the film. In "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (Zack Snyder, 2016), Mulvey played another villain – Anatoly Knyazev, nicknamed the KGBist.
  • It took the makeup team 5 hours to apply the shape-shifting head makeup and body paint to Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
  • Christian Bale starred in David Ayer's directorial debut "Harsh Times" (2005), who later played Batman in Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy (2005, 2008, 2012).
  • The trailer for "Suicide Squad" features two songs — "You Don't Own Me" by Australian singer Grace and "Ballroom Blitz" by the band "Sweet". The second song begins exactly in the middle of the trailer.
  • Scott Eastwood and Jim Parrack are working together for the first time in a David Ayer film since their collaboration on the war drama "Fury" (2014).
  • Joel Kinnaman, who plays Rick Flag, was a series regular on the television series "The Killing" (2011-2014). The third episode of the first season of the series was titled "El Diablo". The character nicknamed Diablo in "Suicide Squad" is played by Jay Hernandez.
  • In the script for the unmade film "Batman Triumphant", Harley Quinn was not the Joker’s lover, but his daughter, who dies in the first film of the anthology directed by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher.
  • Ted Whittall, who appeared in this film as Admiral Olsen, played Rick Flag in the series "Smallville" (2001-2011).
  • Harley Quinn carries a red and black umbrella, which is her color scheme from the "Batman" project (1992). She also uses a baseball bat from the "Batman: Arkham" video game series (2009-2015).
  • Director David Ayer described the film as a "comic book version of "The Dirty Dozen" (referring to Robert Aldrich's 1967 film).
  • Some events take place in Midway City. In the comics, this is the hometown of the superhero couple Hawkman and Hawkgirl.
  • Each member of the Suicide Squad has an item of clothing that references an episode from their past in the comics. For Harkness, it’s a blue shirt with the word "Captain" and small boomerangs on the fabric (in memory of Captain Boomerang's uniform). Killer Croc wears clothing made of crocodile skin. June Moone, or Enchantress, wears something resembling a helmet to keep her abilities in check (in the comics, this was a necklace). Chato Santana wears a hoodie with the inscription "Diablo" (his nickname). Katana's clothing is styled after both her black uniform from the "The New 52" series (launched by "DC Comics" in September 2011) and her classic outfit with the Japanese symbol of the rising sun). Harley Quinn dresses in blue and red, as she does in the "The New 52" series, where she is a member of the Suicide Squad.
  • In the chase scene with the Joker and Harley Quinn, a stuntman, not Ben Affleck, was in the Batman costume.
  • The headquarters for "Task Force X" is Belle Reve correctional facility (literally "Beautiful Dream" in French).
  • Harley Quinn's biography is based on the graphic novel "Mad Love" (1994) by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. According to the plot, Quinn worked at Arkham Asylum, and one of her patients was the Joker, with whom she fell in love. In the film, her medical attire is taken from the comics, and her outfit when transforming into a criminal is taken from the limited comic book series "52" (2006-2007) published by "DC Comics".
  • The events depicted in the film take place after the events of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (Zack Snyder, 2016). This becomes clear from the second trailer when David Harbour's character says: "What if Superman decided to fly in, rip the roof off the White House and drag the President out of the Oval Office?" The word "then" indicates that the general public still believes Superman is dead after his battle with Doomsday during the events described in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (Zack Snyder, 2016).
  • Cara Delevingne was a leading contender for the role of Harley Quinn, but Margot Robbie ultimately landed the part.
  • Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, and Octavia Spencer were considered for the role of Amanda Waller.
  • Most of the actors involved in the film, including Will Smith and Margot Robbie, got a SKWAD tattoo as a sign of their involvement in the project.
  • The film was released 50 years after the Joker’s debut in cinema. Cesar Romero played the role in the television series "Batman" (1966-1968) and the film of the same name.

  • Due to the grim atmosphere of the film, a psychologist was constantly on duty on set.
  • While preparing for the role of Deadshot, Will Smith shaved his head and trained with special forces units of the US Navy and Army. The training included regular visits to a shooting range, where the actor fired a Glock pistol and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
  • Tom Hardy was initially cast as Rick Flag, but he left the project to film "The Revenant" (2015). Hardy later admitted that he regretted not being able to participate in this project.
