The plot of the film is based on real events that occurred in 1958. The prototypes for the main characters, Kit and Holly, were a couple in love, Charlie Starkweather and Caril Fugate, who terrorized American residents with a series of bloody murders.
The cameo role played by the director himself was originally supposed to be played by another actor, but he did not show up for filming.
Sissy Spacek met her future husband, Jack Fisk, while filming this movie.
Don Johnson was considered for the lead male role.
The film has been added to the National Film Registry of the United States.
The two boys sitting on the curb under a lamppost, whom Holly sees from the house window, were played by Martin Sheen's children – Charlie and Emilio.
