Who'll Stop the Rain

John Converse is a journalist in Saigon during the Vietnam War who has become worn down by what he has seen, and he turns to heroin smuggling as a way out. He persuades his friend Ray Hicks, a merchant mariner, to carry two kilograms of the drug back to the United States, with the promise of payment once the package reaches Converse's wife, Marge. Ray delivers it, but the handover goes wrong when men who want the drugs attack him and Marge, forcing the two of them to flee together. Corrupt narcotics agents join the pursuit, and the three people at the centre of the scheme find themselves caught up in violence and betrayal as it unravels.

The film is directed by Karel Reisz, whose earlier features included Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and The Gambler; it came out in 1978, between The Gambler and The French Lieutenant's Woman. Judith Rascoe and Robert Stone wrote the screenplay, adapting Stone's novel, and Nick Nolte plays Ray, with Tuesday Weld as Marge and Michael Moriarty as John. Anthony Zerbe, Richard Masur and Ray Sharkey appear among the credited cast of twenty-seven.

Made by the production company Katzka-Jaffe in the United States, the film runs 126 minutes and belongs to the crime, drama and action genres. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 3,800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.5 from a much smaller set of 75 votes. Its critics' rating of 6.8 from 16 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
