Short description
Joe Clay and Kirsten Arnesen meet and marry, starting a family together. Joe struggles with alcoholism, a habit that eventually leads his wife to begin drinking as well. As the couple descends further into addiction, their professional and personal lives deteriorate, threatening the well-being of their young daughter. While Joe eventually seeks help through a support group to achieve sobriety, Kirsten struggles to acknowledge her illness and resists recovery, creating a deep conflict within the marriage.
Directed by Blake Edwards, this drama was the fifth of 27 films he directed, following The Pink Panther and preceding A Shot in the Dark. The movie stars Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick in the lead roles, with a credited cast of 41 people. Produced by Martin Manulis and written by J.P. Miller, the film was a project of Warner Bros. Pictures and Jalem Productions.
The movie has been well received by audiences and critics. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 7.8/10 based on 15,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 7.5/10 rating from 215 votes. Film critics gave the movie a higher score of 8.8/10 based on 15 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Lemmon recounted in one interview that during the scene with the straitjacket, when his character suffers from delirium tremens, he got so into the role that when filming stopped, the film crew had to calm him down.
- The film touches on a rather serious topic, and the studio bosses doubted its success, so they arranged a preview screening. To their horror, around 40 pairs of viewers got up and left during the screening (a studio record). Only later did it turn out that they had forgotten to indicate on the posters that it was a drama, and viewers, unknowingly, were going to a comedy starring Jack Lemmon.
- Lemmon recounted in one interview that during the scene where his character suffers from delirium tremens, he became so immersed in the role that he had to be calmed down after filming stopped.
- While preparing for filming, Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick repeatedly attended meetings of "Alcoholics Anonymous".
