Short description

Mondo Cane is an Italian documentary made up of travelogue segments drawn from around the world, assembled to confront audiences with cultural practices and spectacles intended to shock or surprise. Among the episodes are a banquet of insects and a South Pacific cargo cult. The film moves between contrasting subjects, placing the rituals and customs of distant societies alongside scenes from Western life, including the frenzy surrounding celebrity, so that the familiar and the foreign reflect on each other. A narrator guides the viewer through the sequence of vignettes.

The film was directed by Paolo Cavara, Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi, with Jacopetti and Cavara also writing the screenplay and Jacopetti producing alongside Angelo Rizzoli. It was the first feature these directors made together and the earliest title in the directing careers of Cavara, Jacopetti and Prosperi, ahead of Africa Blood and Guts in 1966 and Goodbye Uncle Tom in 1971. Rossano Brazzi appears as himself, with Stefano Sibaldi providing the narration.

Released on 30 March 1962, Mondo Cane runs 105 minutes. Audience response has been moderate: it holds 6.2 on IMDb from roughly 4,900 votes and 6.2 on TMDB from about 104 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from ten reviews places professional assessment close to the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the filming of "Dog World," there was a ban on showing death in documentary films, which the filmmakers simply ignored. This film sparked a boom of shocking documentaries, "mondo" films, around the world.
