Short description

Frozen II continues the story of the sisters Anna and Elsa, who have settled into a peaceful life in the kingdom of Arendelle. That calm is disturbed when Elsa begins to hear a mysterious voice calling her toward an enchanted forest and the secrets buried there. Accompanied by Anna, Kristoff, Sven and the snowman Olaf, she sets out beyond the kingdom's borders to find the source of the call and uncover the truth about an ancient mystery tied to their family and their home.

The film is a Walt Disney Animation Studios production directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, who had previously worked together on Frozen and the short Frozen Fever. Allison Schroeder shares screenwriting credit with Lee, and Peter Del Vecho produced. The voice cast returns Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff, with Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown joining as new characters.

Released in November 2019, the sequel was made for about 150 million dollars and went on to earn roughly 1.45 billion dollars worldwide, placing it among the highest-grossing animated films. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from around 217,000 votes, while on TMDB it scores 7.2 from a much smaller voter base. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 342 reviews sits in line with the IMDb figure. Buck's later directorial credit is Wish, and Lee has a further Frozen installment planned.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the forest scene, when Kristoff sings the song "Lost in the Woods" and contemplates proposing to Anna, there's a reference to the opening scene from Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" music video.
  • The civilization of the tribe shown in the film is inspired by the civilization of the Sami people, who live in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia.
  • Young Iduna asks young Agnarr what he is reading, and hears in reply: “Something by a Dane.” The author of 'The Snow Queen,' the fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), was Danish.
  • Olaf claims that turtles "breathe through their butts." This refers to a real phenomenon known as "cloacal respiration." It has been observed in some species of turtles – for example, painted turtles, alligator snapping turtles, and Fitzroy River turtles.
  • In the first part of "Frozen," Elsa is never shown without shoes, so the animators didn't need to draw her toes. But they had to do so in the sequel.
  • In her youth, Iduna asks young Agnarr what he is reading, and hears in reply: "Some Dane." The author of "The Snow Queen," storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, was Danish.
  • When Anna and Elsa are shown playing as children, one of the snow figures has Olaf's body but Marshmallow's face, who was voiced by Paul Briggs. This is a reference to the first film, in which Marshmallow was originally supposed to appear as a giant Olaf, but the decision was later made to make him an ice golem.
  • The symbol of the large snowflake seems somewhat off because it lacks "hexagonal symmetry." In reality, it is the Icelandic runic compass vegvísir – an Icelandic magical staff designed to help its owner find their way in harsh weather.
  • In the forest scene, when Kristoff sings the song "Lost in the Woods" and thinks about proposing to Anna, there is a reference to the opening scene from Queen's music video "Bohemian Rhapsody," where the four band members stand cross-shaped.
  • In the original film *Frozen* (2013), Elsa is never shown without shoes, so the animators didn't bother drawing her toes. Toes had to be added when working on the sequel.
  • The tribe's culture is inspired by the culture of the Sami people – a people living in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
  • Olaf claims that turtles "breathe through their butts." This refers to a real phenomenon known as cloacal respiration.
  • The first teaser gained 116.4 million views in the first 24 hours and set a record for an animated film teaser.
