Frank Sinatra plays Joey Evans, a singer and opportunist who arrives in San Francisco with no money and talks his way into a job at a nightclub. There he meets Linda English, a dancer who is not impressed by his advances, and Vera Simpson, a wealthy widow who offers to fund a club of his own. His interest in Vera is not purely romantic, and his pursuit of Linda complicates the arrangement. The film follows Joey as he tries to balance the two women and his ambitions.
George Sidney directed this musical adaptation of the Broadway show, working from a screenplay by Dorothy Kingsley and Lorenz Hart. It sits between Scaramouche and Who Was That Lady? in a run of films that includes Anchors Aweigh, Show Boat and Bye Bye Birdie. Rita Hayworth appears as Vera and Kim Novak as Linda, with Frank Sinatra in the lead. Columbia Pictures and related companies produced the film for about three million dollars, and it earned roughly seven million worldwide.
On IMDb, voters rate the film 6.6 out of 10 from about 6,300 votes, while on TMDB it holds a 6.3 from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating of 6.6 from eight reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than apart from them, suggesting a generally moderate reception all round.
