Mr. Wagner is a professional killer who has spent over forty years treating his violent trade with the care of a craftsman, following a personal code of ethics. Now an elderly man, he seeks a successor to inherit his knowledge and values. He chooses Max, a young and disinterested thief, to be his student. As Wagner attempts to pass on his skills, he finds that the modern world and its morality have shifted away from the standards of his past.

This crime drama is a joint production from Germany and France. It was directed by Mathieu Kassovitz, who also co-wrote the screenplay and starred as Max. This was the second film Kassovitz directed, following La Haine and preceding The Crimson Rivers.
