What's left behind the scenes
- During rehearsals, the actors were asked to bring music recordings to the set that, in their opinion, their characters might listen to. To help the cast get to know each other better, dances were organized – everyone had to dance regardless of what music was playing.
- According to director Mike Mills, the film is semi-autobiographical. Each of the main characters is based on one or more women who influenced Mills at different periods of his life. For example, Annette Bening's character is based on his mother.
