Okwe, a Nigerian doctor living in London without legal status, works days as a minicab driver and nights at the front desk of a hotel. He rents a room from Senay, a Turkish asylum seeker who cleans at the same hotel, and the two keep a careful distance from each other while sharing the flat on alternating hours. That arrangement breaks apart when Okwe finds a human heart blocking a toilet in one of the rooms. The discovery draws him into the criminal dealings run out of the hotel, and he and Senay become caught between employers who exploit their lack of papers and a police force they cannot turn to.
Stephen Frears directed the film, the thirteenth of the twenty-three features listed for him in chronological order, following Liam and preceding Mrs. Henderson Presents. Steven Knight wrote the screenplay, and Robert Jones and Tracey Seaward produced. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Okwe and Audrey Tautou plays Senay, with Sergi López, Benedict Wong, Sophie Okonedo and Zlatko Burić among the cast of thirty-three. The production, a British and American one, runs ninety-seven minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 7.8/10 from 142 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.9/10 from 518 votes, leaving the critics' average noticeably above the audience score.
