Production of the film was halted for several days when Mel Gibson had his appendix removed.
The music composed by Howard Shore for the film did not appeal to director Ron Howard, and he ultimately replaced Shore with composer James Horner.
Screenwriter Richard Price played the role of a detective.
The film references Herbert Wells' science fiction novel "The Time Machine," specifically the two races of people into which humanity evolved in the distant future: the Morlocks and the Eloi.
Ray Liotta declined the offer to play Jimmy Shayker. He disliked the theme of violence against children present in the film's script.
The character played by Gary Sinise carries 2-3 pistols. This was common practice in the New York Police Department because, at the time, officers were prohibited from carrying so-called speedloaders (a device used to reduce the time and effort required to reload a firearm), and in addition to their standard-issue weapon, police officers carried spare 'guns'.
