Short description

Set in Tokyo, Cure follows detective Kenichi Takabe as he investigates a string of killings in which ordinary, previously law-abiding people murder someone close to them, disfigure the body with a cross-shaped cut, and then claim to remember nothing of what they did. Takabe works the case alongside the psychiatrist Makoto Sakuma, and their inquiries stall until a strange young man is taken into custody near the scene of one of the crimes. Known as Kunio Mamiya, he has no fixed background and no clear memory of his own, yet seems able to draw out and direct something violent in the people he meets.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa wrote and directed the film, the third of fifteen features he has directed, arriving between Door III and Serpent's Path. Koji Yakusho plays Takabe, with Masato Hagiwara as Mamiya, Tsuyoshi Ujiki as Sakuma, Anna Nakagawa as Takabe's wife Fumie, Yukijiro Hotaru as Ichiro Kuwano and Yoriko Doguchi as Dr. Akiko Miyajima, among a credited cast of twenty. Produced by Daiei Film and Twins Japan and running 111 minutes, it blends crime, horror, mystery and thriller.

On IMDb the film holds a 7.5 rating from 63 reviews, and on TMDB it holds a 7.6 rating from 872 votes, indicating a similar level of approval from critics and a general audience.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was originally going to be titled "Missionary," but during filming, members of the totalitarian cult Aum Shinrikyo released sarin gas in the Tokyo subway; concerns arose regarding the appropriateness of a title with such an explicitly religious connotation, and the name was changed to "Healing".
  • In the finale of the alternative version of the film, the waitress kills someone right before the credits roll.
