- The film "Berlin Syndrome" is based on the eponymous debut novel by Melanie Just, published in 2011.
- The film used a variety of color palettes and shades that were observed in Berlin. The exterior scenes were shot over three weeks. And all the interior scenes were shot on a studio lot in Melbourne. During the film's preparation, a team was created that went to Germany and made sketches of an apartment, which served as the basis for the set design.
- The action in the director Kate Shortland's previous feature film, the 2012 war drama "Lore," also takes place in Berlin.
- Teresa Palmer considers herself a fan of director Kate Shortland and says she dreamed of working with her ever since she saw her first film.
- Filming took place initially in Berlin, after which the film crew moved to Melbourne. Having completed all her scenes, Teresa Palmer immediately began filming Mel Gibson's war drama "Hacksaw Ridge" (2016), which also took place in Australia.
- The set for Andy's apartment was built in the pavilions of Australian Docklands Studios Melbourne, where most of the filming also took place. The "apartment" had light, gas, and water. The view from the windows was created using digital technology.
