X-Men: The Last Stand is a 2006 superhero film in which the discovery of a cure for mutation forces mutants to choose between keeping their powers and becoming ordinary humans. The X-Men, led by Professor Charles Xavier, and Magneto's Brotherhood take opposing positions on the cure, while the resurrected Jean Grey, transformed into the Dark Phoenix, becomes a danger to mutants and humans alike. The film is directed by Brett Ratner, the seventh of thirteen films he has directed in chronological order, following After the Sunset and preceding Rush Hour 3. Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn wrote the screenplay, and Ralph Winter, Lauren Shuler Donner and Avi Arad produced it.
Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen and Anna Paquin lead a cast of 62 credited performers. With a budget of 210 million US dollars and a worldwide box office of 459 million, the film recovered its production costs but did not match the earnings of its predecessors.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 571,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from 10,675 votes. The film critics' rating stands at 6.1 out of 10 from 235 reviews, slightly below what general audiences gave it.
