Gnome, Watson, and Juliet aboard the Nimrod hide in a vehicle that came out of the workshops of Moffat and Gattis. The company's name consists of the surnames of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the creators of the "Sherlock" (2010) series.
The character of Sherlock Gnome is based on the actor Basil Rathbone (1892-1967), who played Sherlock Holmes in 12 films shot between 1939 and 1946.
At the height of work on the project, between 80 and 100 animators were involved.
As Sherlock Gnome and Moriarty fall from London Bridge, fireworks begin behind them, and their blue lights resemble a waterfall. This is likely a reference to the story "The Final Problem" (1893) by English writer Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), where Holmes and Moriarty have their final confrontation at the Reichenbach Falls.
