What's left behind the scenes

  • The prototype for the character of Shirley Stoller (1929-1999) was Ilse Koch (1906-1967), known as the 'Buchenwald Witch.' The wife of the commandants of the Buchenwald and Majdanek concentration camps, Karl-Otto Koch (1897-1945), she was said to have derived pleasure from the suffering of prisoners. Furthermore, she was accused of ordering lampshades to be made from the skin of prisoners, although these specific accusations were never proven.
