Short description
A man and woman meet by chance at a romantic inn over dinner and, although both are happily married to others, they find themselves in the same bed the next morning questioning how this could have happened. They agree to meet on the same weekend each year—in the same hotel room—and the years pass each has some personal crisis that the other helps them through, often without both of them understanding what is going on.

- As with the play by Bernard Slade upon which it is based, the film's plot timeline is broken into intervals of approximately five years.
- The events described in the film span a total of 26 years; between segments, a brief summary is provided of the world events that will occur over the next five-year period.
- Several candidates were considered for the lead roles. At one time, Al Pacino was chosen for the role of George. The author of the play, Bernard Slade, hoped to cast the actors who performed the roles on Broadway—Ellen Burstyn and Charles Grodin. Burstyn was initially deemed the wrong age, and Grodin was simply rejected. Ultimately, the roles went to Ellen Burstyn and Alan Alda.
