Short description

Mike Hamilton, a Philadelphia lawyer, comes to Naples to settle the estate of his long estranged "black sheep" brother. Once there, he discovers that the deceased has left an 8 year old boy who is being raised by Michael's sister-in-law Lucia Curcio. To complicate matters, Lucia happens to be a sexy nightclub performer.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The working titles were 'Song of Capri', 'Island of Capri', and 'Gulf of Naples'.
  • Gable's final film released during his lifetime (the film 'The Misfits' was released in 1961, i.e., after the actor's death).
  • At one point during filming, Sophia Loren accused director Melville Shavelson of deliberately filming her from her less flattering side to make the lead actor, Clark Gable (1901-1960), look better by comparison. The relationship between Loren and Gable, which was already not very warm, deteriorated completely.
  • The film was shot in Naples and its surroundings. Sophia Loren's arrival for filming in Italy was fraught with certain difficulties, as law enforcement agencies at the time were investigating her "marriage" to Carlo Ponti (1912-2007), who was then married to someone else. For a Catholic, obtaining a divorce permit was no simple matter, so Loren and Ponti, desperate to stop waiting for the divorce, secretly married in Mexico. Although the relationship between Loren and Clark Gable left much to be desired, he nevertheless helped Ponti travel to celebrate Loren's 25th birthday.
  • The screenplay was originally written for a British film starring Gracie Fields (1898-1979). When funding for the project could not be found, the script was bought by Paramount Pictures, who hired someone to rewrite it; as a result, Fields' British female protagonist became an American man played by Clark Gable.
