Mary Clancy and Rachel Devery meet as new students at St. Francis Academy, a girls' boarding school overseen by a strict Mother Superior. Restless and immature, the two friends ease their boredom by playing pranks on the nuns and on classmates they dislike, becoming a persistent source of disruption. Over the years they gradually grow up and begin to regard the sisters and the school differently.
The film is a comedy directed by Ida Lupino, made late in a directing career that had begun with Not Wanted in 1949 and continued through Never Fear, The Hitch-Hiker and The Bigamist. It was produced by William Frye from a screenplay by Blanche Hanalis and released by Columbia Pictures. Hayley Mills plays Mary, June Harding plays Rachel, and Rosalind Russell plays Mother Superior, with Binnie Barnes, Camilla Sparv and Mary Wickes among a credited cast of thirty-five. It runs 112 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from around 6,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a much smaller base of 77 votes. Produced on a budget of 2 million dollars, the film found a broad and durable audience, reflected in the volume of votes it has collected on IMDb decades after its release.
