1900

Set in the countryside of Emilia in northern Italy, 1900 follows two men born on the same day at the turn of the twentieth century. Olmo Dalcò is the son of a peasant labourer, while Alfredo Berlinghieri is heir to the estate his family owns. The two grow up together and remain friends, but the social distance between them widens as Italy moves through land strikes, the First World War, the rise of fascism and its aftermath. Olmo becomes committed to the struggles of the workers and farmers, while Alfredo drifts toward the comfortable world of the landowners, and their bond is tested by the political forces pulling them apart. Both also become involved with Ada, and later figures around them, including the overseer Attila, embody the violence of the period.

Bernardo Bertolucci directed and co-wrote the film with Franco Arcalli and Giuseppe Bertolucci, following The Conformist and Last Tango in Paris. Robert De Niro plays Alfredo and Gérard Depardieu plays Olmo, with Dominique Sanda, Stefania Sandrelli, Donald Sutherland and Burt Lancaster in supporting roles. The production was a large international undertaking, with a budget of about nine million dollars, and runs over five hours.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6 from around 29,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.8 from roughly 700 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 from 23 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
