Triumph of the Will

Triumph of the Will is a German documentary directed by Leni Riefenstahl, who also produced it and co-wrote the screenplay with Walter Ruttmann and Eberhard Taubert. Released in March 1935 and running 114 minutes, it records the Nazi Party rally held in Nuremberg in September 1934, showing Adolf Hitler and other leading figures of the regime addressing the assembled party members and crowds. The film presents the event as a display of unity behind Hitler, using staged camera positions and editing to give the proceedings a ceremonial, monumental quality. Hitler appears as himself, alongside figures such as Hermann Göring, Max Amann, Martin Bormann, Hans Frank and Sepp Dietrich.

Nuremberg was the setting; the rally followed Hitler's rise to power the previous year. The film came early in Riefenstahl's directing career, after her earlier work, and became the best-known example of documentary used as political propaganda.
