Little Women
Short description
Set during and after the American Civil War, Little Women follows the four March sisters as they grow up in a household run by their mother while their father is away serving as a chaplain. Jo, the most headstrong of the sisters, wants to become a writer, while Meg, Beth and Amy each find their own paths toward adulthood, marriage and independence. The family's kind neighbour, Mr. Lawrence, and his grandson Laurie become part of the sisters' lives, and Jo's bond with Laurie is tested as the household changes around her.
George Cukor directed the film, the first of seventeen features in his directing career in chronological order, before Camille in 1936. Sarah Y. Mason and Victor Heerman wrote the screenplay, based on Louisa May Alcott's novel. Katharine Hepburn plays Jo, with Joan Bennett as Amy, Jean Parker as Beth, Frances Dee as Meg, Paul Lukas as Professor Bhaer and Edna May Oliver as Aunt March, among 26 credited cast members and 49 credited crew. The film took about four million dollars worldwide, a strong result for its time.
Opinions differ sharply by audience. On IMDb it holds a 7.1 rating from around 8,500 votes, and on TMDB a 6.8 from a much smaller 157 votes. Critics rated it considerably higher, 8.4 out of 10 from 19 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003) asked costume designer Walter Plunkett (1902-1982) to make her a dress exactly like the one her grandmother was depicted wearing in one of the photographs taken using the "tintype" process (a photographic process that uses metal plates coated with dark lacquer and light-sensitive collodion).
- Walter Plunkett had to urgently alter Joan Bennett's (1910-1990) dresses to conceal the actress's pregnancy. At the time she was cast, she managed to hide the fact that she was pregnant from director George Cukor (1899-1983).
