Salon Kitty is set in Berlin in 1939, where Kitty Kellermann runs an upscale brothel. An SS officer, Helmut Wallenberg, takes over the establishment and staffs it with women chosen for their loyalty to the Nazi party, ordering them to spy on the influential diplomats, military men and politicians who come there. Hidden microphones and recording devices are installed throughout the building. The arrangement works until Margherita, one of the women, becomes involved with a German officer who has turned against the regime, putting the surveillance operation at risk.
Tinto Brass directed the film, which is his sixth feature and came out in 1976, between the earlier films he made from the mid-1960s onward and Caligula in 1979. Ennio De Concini and Maria Pia Fusco wrote the screenplay. Ingrid Thulin plays Kitty Kellermann, Helmut Berger plays Wallenberg and Teresa Ann Savoy plays Margherita; John Steiner, Sara Sperati and Maria Michi are also in the cast, which numbers sixty-five credited performers. The production was a German, Italian and French co-production, with Ermanno Donati and Giulio Sbarigia producing.
Reception has been mixed. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.4 from about 5,600 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.6 from roughly 150 votes, while a critics' score of 5.3 comes from seven reviews, so professional and audience assessments are close to each other. The film runs 130 minutes.
