Charlotte is a young married woman in Paris, the mother of a son from an earlier marriage and the wife of Pierre, an airline pilot who is often away. She works as a journalist for a women's magazine and spends time with Robert, an actor. Over the course of a single day, she sees her husband and meets a man he introduces to her, learns that she is pregnant without knowing which of the two men is the father, and talks at length with her lover in a hotel room. How she should decide between the two becomes the film's central question.
Jean-Luc Godard directed and wrote this drama, the eighth of the twenty-three features he has directed in chronological order, following Band of Outsiders and preceding Pierrot le Fou. Macha Méril plays Charlotte, with Bernard Noël as the lover Robert, Philippe Leroy as the husband Pierre, Christophe Bourseiller as Nicolas and Margareth Clémenti in a smaller part. The film runs 95 minutes and was released in December 1964.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.1 from about 4,700 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 from 133 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 21 reviews places it above both audience scores.
