Seven Sinners

Seven Sinners is a 1940 American adventure comedy romance set in the South Seas, where the U.S. Navy maintains bases. Bijou, a cabaret singer with a talent for causing trouble, keeps getting expelled from one Pacific island after another because the men who flock to her performances inevitably wreck the places where she works. She arrives at Boni-Komba and finds work at a cafe patronized by American sailors. There she meets Lieutenant Dan Brent, and their romance leads to a marriage proposal. Dan's superiors object to the match, believing her disreputable past will damage his career, and a local figure named Antro also has his own claims on Bijou, leaving Dan to weigh his future against his feelings for her.

Tay Garnett directed the film, which sits between Love Is News (1937) and The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) in his filmography. Marlene Dietrich plays Bijou, with John Wayne as Dan, and Albert Dekker, Broderick Crawford, Anna Lee and Mischa Auer among the supporting cast. Harry Tugend and John Meehan wrote the screenplay, and Joe Pasternak produced for Universal Pictures.
