The Fabulous Baron Munchausen

The Fabulous Baron Munchausen follows a twentieth-century astronaut, Toník, who lands on the Moon and finds he is not the first visitor there. The baron has already taken up residence, along with Cyrano de Bergerac and figures from Jules Verne's tales of lunar travel. The two men travel together to Earth, where the baron's bragging, his escapades and his romantic ambitions drive a series of adventures that include an attempt to free a princess from a sultan. The film mixes live action with animation.

Karel Zeman directed and wrote the screenplay with Jiří Brdečka. It is the third of four features he directed to appear in the order listed here, following Journey to the Beginning of Time and The Fabulous World of Jules Verne and preceding The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Miloš Kopecký plays the baron, with Jana Brejchová as the princess, Rudolf Jelínek as the astronaut, Karel Höger as Cyrano and Rudolf Hrušínský as the sultan. The credited cast numbers 25 and the credited crew 40.

Released in 1962, the film runs 85 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.7 from around 3,500 votes, while on TMDB it has a 7.4 from 96 votes: a long-standing, modest-sized following on the one and a much smaller sample on the other.
