Initially, Orson Welles (1915-1985), Luis Buñuel (1900-1983), and Federico Fellini (1920-1993) were considered as directors of the film.
Peter O'Toole (1932-2013) was initially cast for the role of Toby, but he left the project. Federico Fellini called an agency in London and asked them to send him someone in Rome. The agency sent Terence Stamp and James Fox, and Fellini chose the former.
