Jessica Lange dyed her hair black specifically for this role.
The military base in the film is located in North Carolina, but filming took place at a military base in Kentucky. Filming also took place in Tennessee, Maryland, and West Virginia.
Patsy and her brother were not going for beer, but for material for their mother (who worked as a seamstress) when the car accident occurred, in which Patsy nearly died.
Charlie Dick and their daughter Julia claim that Charlie never hit Patsy in front of their daughter. Moreover, Charlie insists that he hit her only once in his life to stop her hysterics. In the scene of the beating, Patsy appears to be the victim, but family friends say that their 'fights' were interesting to watch, as everyone knew that Patsy would win anyway.
The plane crashed early in the evening, falling into the forest rather than crashing into a mountain. The pilot did not have sufficient skills to operate in poor visibility conditions.
