Short description
The lion cub Simba is born heir to his father Mufasa's kingdom, a position that his uncle Scar, once next in line, resents. Scar's scheming costs Mufasa his life and drives Simba into exile, leaving the pride under Scar's control. Growing up in the company of a meerkat and a warthog who teach him to avoid responsibility, Simba must eventually choose between an easy life away from home and the duty waiting for him.
This 2019 photorealistic remake of Disney's animated film was directed by Jon Favreau, working from a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson. It followed Favreau's The Jungle Book, an earlier reworking of a Disney animated title, and came before his return to the Star Wars universe with The Mandalorian and Grogu. The voice cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, John Kani as Rafiki, John Oliver as Zazu, and James Earl Jones, who had voiced Mufasa in the 1994 original.
Made for a reported 260 million dollars, the film took about 1.66 billion dollars worldwide. Audiences rate it 6.8/10 on IMDb and 7.1/10 on TMDB, while the film critics' rating stands at 6/10 across 435 reviews, a narrower gap between critics and viewers than is typical for such large releases.

- The mandrill Rafiki’s name translates from Swahili as "friend."
