Short description

It's time again for California's "Young American Miss" beauty pageant, the biggest event of the year for Big Bob Freelander and Brenda DiCarlo, who give their all to put on a successful pageant. But Brenda is having marital difficulties and Bob's son is up to some mischief. Could this year's pageant be in jeopardy?

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to Annette O'Tool, who appeared in the film, there were only three professional actresses among the beauty pageant contestants; all the others were either background extras or professional pageant participants.
  • United Artists, the film's official distributor, had only four theaters of its own across the entire US. It was decided that the film would only be shown in these theaters and that no money should be spent on promotion, as it was unlikely to be successful. The film's director and producer, Michael Ritchie, attempted to promote it on his own initiative. He personally visited the cities where United Artists theaters were located, accompanied by several actresses from the film as part of an improvised promotional tour, though this did not help much.
  • The script specified that Bruce Dern's character leaves the Marines without saying a word, but the actor improvised several lines on the fly.
  • According to Nicholas Pryor, who played Andy, the filmmakers provided meals for the technical crew and cast during filming by promising free advertising to the management of a local fast-food chain.
  • No one in the creative team knew the results of the beauty pageant in advance, except for screenwriter Jerry Belson and director Michael Ritchie. This was done to increase the tension among those involved in the filming process. Even the cinematographer knew nothing—hence the jerky camera movements as it searches the crowd for the finalists whose names are being announced by the host.
