Howard Chesser is a small-time diamond dealer whose ordinary life with his girlfriend Maren takes a sharp turn when the wealthy Clyde Massey offers him a generous fee to oversee the purchase and cutting of a valuable diamond. The deal goes wrong when the stone is taken from him, leaving him exposed to blackmail and forced into a far larger crime: a raid on the Diamond Exchange at 11 Harrowhouse Street in London. Maren, whose late husband left her his fortune on the condition that she never remarry, becomes part of the scheme, which depends on help from inside the exchange.
The film was directed by Aram Avakian from a screenplay by Jeffrey Bloom, and produced by Elliott Kastner for 20th Century Fox and Elliott Kastner Productions. Charles Grodin plays Chesser, with Candice Bergen as Maren and James Mason as Watts. Trevor Howard appears as Massey, and John Gielgud and Helen Cherry are also in the cast. It runs 94 minutes and mixes crime and action with comedy and drama, a combination reflected in its reception: on IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from around 1,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.8/10 from a much smaller group of 31 voters.
