- The film is based on the novella "The Turn of the Screw" (1898) by Henry James (1843-1916).
- Director Michael Winner (1935-2013) initially planned to cast Vanessa Redgrave in the role of Miss Jessel, but she was busy filming in Italy and declined the offer. Jenny Linden also turned down this role.
- Miss Jessel's death required actress Stephanie Beacham to be in cold water. For the filming, she was advised to wear a thicker, warmer wetsuit, but she chose the thinnest one that wouldn't hide her figure.
- Stephanie Beacham completely disrobed for filming an erotic sadomasochistic scene with Quint, played by Marlon Brando (1924-2004). He, naturally, refused to disrobe completely and remained in his underwear and, for some reason, shoes.
