The film "Brad's Status" is the third collaboration between Ben Stiller and Luke Wilson, following "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy".
According to director and screenwriter Mike White, his father was a priest and from time to time struggled with the same questions as the film's protagonist, considering himself a failure. White said that, to a certain extent, he made the film as a gesture of gratitude to his own father.
Ben Stiller became interested in the script because of the father-son relationship, played in the film by Stiller and Austin Abrams, respectively.
Jason, the protagonist's college friend, was played by Luke Wilson, who was initially considered for the role of Billy. Ultimately, that role went to Jemaine Clement.
Jenna Fischer played Melanie, but due to a back injury, she was unable to film the driving scene on the first day of shooting.
