Raoul is devoted to his wife Solange, but she has sunk into a deep apathy, barely speaking and filling her days with knitting. Hoping to draw her out of it, he arranges for another man, Stéphane, to become her lover. The plan fails to stir her, and the two men end up spending much of their time together instead. Solange eventually finds a connection of her own with a thirteen-year-old boy, a bond that unsettles everyone around her.
Bertrand Blier wrote and directed this Belgian-French comedy drama, released in early 1978. It was his third feature, following Going Places in 1974 and Femmes Fatales in 1976, and it precedes Buffet Froid, Beau Pere and Ménage among the nine films listed for him. Gérard Depardieu plays Raoul, with Patrick Dewaere as Stéphane and Carole Laure as Solange. Michel Serrault, Eléonore Hirt and Jean Rougerie appear in supporting roles.
Audience responses to the film are moderate and closely aligned: it holds a 6.9 rating on IMDb from roughly 4,700 votes and a 6.6 on TMDB from about 150. A critics' rating of 7.4 from eighteen reviews places it noticeably higher than those viewer scores.
