Kissin' Cousins is a 1964 musical comedy set in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. An Air Force officer named Josh Morgan is sent to the backwoods to persuade his rural relatives, the Tatum family, to let the military lease part of their mountain land for a missile base. The Tatum clan is suspicious of federal officials and reluctant to give up their property. When Josh arrives, he meets his cousin Jodie, who looks almost exactly like him but has blond hair where Josh's is dark, and the two men react to each other with little enthusiasm. The film blends comedy, romance, and musical numbers around this family standoff.
Elvis Presley plays both Josh and Jodie, heading a cast that includes Arthur O'Connell as Pappy Tatum, Glenda Farrell as Ma Tatum, Jack Albertson as Captain Robert Salbo, Pamela Austin as Selena Tatum, and Cynthia Pepper as Midge. Gene Nelson directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Gerald Drayson Adams, with Sam Katzman producing for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Four-Leaf Productions.
The film was Nelson's first outing as a director, followed by Harum Scarum in 1965. It took about three million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 42 votes, a modest figure that places it among the lighter entries in Presley's film career.
