Set during the American Civil War, the film follows three gunslingers across the American Southwest as they hunt for a fortune in stolen gold. Blondie, a reserved bounty hunter; Tuco, a Mexican bandit; and Angel Eyes, a mercenary killer, each hold only part of the information needed to find the hiding place, so they are forced into uneasy partnerships even as each intends to keep the money for himself. Their search plays out against a country torn apart by war, and none of the three can afford to trust the others.
Sergio Leone directed and co-wrote the film with Luciano Vincenzoni and Agenore Incrocci, with Alberto Grimaldi producing. It is the third of Leone's Westerns, following A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965) and preceding Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), and it shares the earlier films' star, Clint Eastwood. Eli Wallach plays Tuco and Lee Van Cleef plays Angel Eyes, with Aldo Giuffrè, Luigi Pistilli and Rada Rassimov among the credited cast.
Made for about one million dollars, the film took roughly twenty-five million dollars worldwide, a strong return for its budget. Reception has remained high over the decades. On IMDb it holds 8.8/10 from around 887,000 votes, and on TMDB 8.5/10 from about 9,960 votes, while a film critics' rating of 9.2/10 across 76 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
