Homer Thrace, an American admirer of Greek culture, arrives in Piraeus hoping to find the roots of classical civilization. Instead he meets Ilya, a cheerful local prostitute, and becomes convinced he can reform her. She agrees to give up her trade for a short period, but her free-spirited nature and her friends in the port resist his efforts.
Jules Dassin directed, wrote and produced the film, which followed Rififi in his filmography and came before Topkapi. Dassin also plays Homer, while Melina Mercouri, his wife, stars as Ilya. The supporting cast includes George Foundas, Titos Vandis, Mitsos Lygizos and Despo Diamantidou. The film was produced by MelinaFilm and Lopert Pictures Corporation and runs 91 minutes.
Released in 1960, Never on Sunday became a considerable commercial success, taking in about 8 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from roughly 6,600 votes, and on TMDB it scores 6.8 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 from nine reviews places it somewhat below the audience score on IMDb.
