Short description

Spies in Disguise centres on Lance Sterling, a confident and successful secret agent, and Walter Beckett, the socially awkward young scientist who designs the gadgets Lance relies on in the field. The two could hardly be more different, and Walter's inventions are the main point of contact between them. When a mission goes badly wrong, the pair are forced into an unexpected form of cooperation and must learn to depend on each other, with the fate of the world at stake if they cannot make it work.

The animated action comedy was released in December 2019 and runs 102 minutes. It was directed by Troy Quane and Nick Bruno, following Quane's The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol and preceding both directors' later work on Nimona. Lloyd Taylor and Brad Copeland wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast includes Will Smith as Lance, Tom Holland as Walter, Ben Mendelsohn as Killian, Rashida Jones as Marcy Kappel, Karen Gillan as Eyes and DJ Khaled as Ears. Production involved Chernin Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox Animation, with a budget of 100 million US dollars and a worldwide gross of 172 million.

On IMDb the film holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 62,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.5 from roughly 3,000 votes; a critics' rating of 6.5 from 124 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The hotel where Lance tracks down Kimura actually exists. It is located in the Mexican city of Playa del Carmen.
  • The creators of the film were inspired by Lucas Martell's short animated film "The Impossible Pigeon" (2009).
