Les Girls centres on a former dancer, Sybil Wren, who publishes a memoir about her years with a European cabaret act called Barry Nichols and Les Girls. A fellow dancer, Angèle Ducros, takes offence at how she is portrayed and sues for libel. The courtroom proceedings become the frame for three conflicting accounts of the same events, as Sybil, Angèle and finally Barry Nichols each recall what happened among the troupe, particularly the romantic entanglements. The recollections differ sharply, leaving no simple version of the truth.
George Cukor directed the film, the fourteenth of the seventeen features he made in chronological order, following A Star Is Born and preceding Let's Make Love. John Patrick wrote the screenplay, and Sol C. Siegel produced for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with Sol C. Siegel Productions. Gene Kelly plays Barry, with Mitzi Gaynor, Kay Kendall and Taina Elg as the dancers, alongside Jacques Bergerac and Leslie Phillips in supporting roles.
Released in October 1957 and running 114 minutes, the film blends comedy, music and romance. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from around 3,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from a much smaller base of 63 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 from nine reviews places professional assessment somewhat above the broader audience response.
