Silk Stockings

A Soviet composer living in Paris has been persuaded by an American film producer to stay in the West and write music for a Hollywood picture. Moscow sends three agents to bring him home, but the trio is so taken with life in Paris that they fail completely. The regime then dispatches Ninotchka Yoschenko, a stern and utterly committed operative, to finish the job and collect her wayward colleagues. She arrives determined to resist Western decadence, and the producer sets out to change her mind. The film is a musical remake of the 1939 comedy Ninotchka, drawn from the Broadway stage version.

Rouben Mamoulian directed, working from a screenplay by Melchior Lengyel, Leonard Gershe and Leonard Spigelgass, with Arthur Freed producing for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was Mamoulian's first film since The Mark of Zorro in 1940 and the fifth of the features he directed. Fred Astaire plays Steve Canfield and Cyd Charisse plays Ninotchka, with Janis Paige, Peter Lorre, George Tobias and Jules Munshin in support. Made for about 2 million dollars, it runs 117 minutes.

On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 4,600 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 out of 10 from a much smaller sample of 64. A critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from five reviews places it above both audience scores, though that figure rests on very few reviews.
