What's left behind the scenes

  • Before and during filming, international terrorist Carlos (whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez) repeatedly threatened director Olivier Assayas, demanding that he abandon the idea of making this film.
  • Some of the dialogue in the film repeats verbatim lines from tape recordings made by the Ministry for State Security of the German Democratic Republic, the Stasi.
  • During filming, Edgar Ramirez gained 15 kg in weight to show the changes in Carlos's appearance by the time of his arrest.
  • Initially, the film was planned to be 90 minutes long, with the central event being Carlos's arrest in Sudan in 1994. However, while gathering material for the film, director Olivier Assayas realized that limiting the plot to such a narrow framework would be incorrect.
  • Director Olivier Assayas hoped to use some compositions by the alternative rock band The Feelies (1976-1992) in the film, but its members did not give their permission, citing a reluctance to have their work associated with terrorism.
