Carlos

Carlos tells the story of Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, the Venezuelan who became known to the world as Carlos the Jackal. Beginning in early 1970s London, the young revolutionary, eager to fight for oppressed Third World nations, joins a Palestinian underground group. In the years that follow he becomes a central figure in international terrorism, working at different times for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Japanese Red Army, and operating as an opportunistic mercenary for Middle Eastern intelligence services. He builds his own organization behind the Iron Curtain during the closing years of the Cold War, and his name is tied to the 1975 raid on the OPEC headquarters in Vienna. The film follows his long path until his capture.

Olivier Assayas directed this 339-minute work, the eighth of the fifteen films he has directed, arriving between Boarding Gate and Something in the Air. Dan Franck, Assayas and Daniel LeConte wrote the screenplay. Edgar Ramírez plays the title role, with Alexander Scheer, Nora Waldstätten, Talal Jurdi, Christoph Bach and Julia Hummer among the credited cast of fifty-nine. The production, backed by StudioCanal, Canal+, CinéCinéma and ARTE France Cinéma, had a budget of 18 million USD.
