The head and one of the founders of the film company MGM, Louis B. Mayer (1884-1957), insisted that the film have a happy ending, so the finale had to be reshot. Wallace Beery (1885-1949) was so angered by the need to continue filming that he engaged in outright sabotage – he mixed up lines, spent hours in his dressing room, and took long breaks. As a result, what would have taken only one day of shooting stretched to four days.
