Sing 2 continues the story of Buster Moon, a koala who runs a theater with a troupe of animal performers. Having made his local venue a success, Buster sets his sights on a bigger stage: a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in Redshore City. With no industry connections, he and his singers sneak into the offices of Crystal Entertainment to pitch their idea to its owner, the wolf mogul Jimmy Crystal. To win his backing, they promise a role for Clay Calloway, a lion rock star who withdrew from public life years earlier. Buster has never met him, so he must track the recluse down and persuade him to perform again.
Garth Jennings wrote and directed the film, his fifth feature and the second installment in the Sing series, following the 2016 original. Matthew McConaughey returns as the voice of Buster, alongside Reese Witherspoon as Rosita, Scarlett Johansson as Ash, Taron Egerton as Johnny, Tori Kelly as Meena and Bobby Cannavale as the new character Mr. Crystal. Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy produced for Illumination and Universal Pictures.
Released in December 2021, the film cost about 85 million dollars and earned roughly 408 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from over eighty thousand votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.8 from a smaller pool. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 137 reviews places it below both audience scores, suggesting viewers responded more warmly than reviewers did.
