Short description

Jeanne Dielman is a widow living with her teenage son Sylvain in a Brussels apartment whose address gives the film its title. Her days follow a fixed routine: she makes the bed, prepares meals, shops, cleans, and looks after the home while the boy is at school. In the afternoons she receives men at the apartment, and the money she earns this way supports herself and her son. The household tasks and the visits are carried out with the same methodical calm, and the film observes three consecutive days of this existence. Over time, that strict order begins to break down.

Chantal Akerman directed and wrote the film, which followed her 1974 feature Je Tu Il Elle. Delphine Seyrig plays Jeanne, with Jan Decorte as Sylvain and Henri Storck, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze and Yves Bical as the callers. It runs 202 minutes and was produced in Belgium and France.

The film holds a rating of 8.7 out of 10 from 59 critics' reviews, noticeably higher than its audience scores of 7.5 on IMDb from around 17,000 votes and 7.4 on TMDB from roughly 400 votes. That gap suggests critics have placed it considerably higher than general viewers have. It remains one of the director's best-known works.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The automatism of the main character's daily actions was based by director Chantal Akerman (1950-2015) on her own mother.
