The Alphabet
Short description
Based on a real nightmare, this horror animation follows a woman trapped in an absurdist vision. As a children's choir recites the alphabet, various letters of the alphabet appear as strange, living entities that transform and interact with the environment and the human body in disturbing ways.
This short film was written and directed by David Lynch and represents the first of 17 films he directed. Produced by H. Barton Wasserman through the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the project features Peggy Reavey in the role of the girl. The production utilized stop-motion techniques to create a sequence of evolving images and scenarios.
Released in 1969, the four-minute film has received a moderate reception from audiences. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 6.7/10 based on 9,400 votes, while on TMDB, it has a rating of 6.4/10 from 257 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- David Lynch received funding for the film from his friend Barton Wasserman, who was impressed by Lynch's first animated work (Six Men Getting Sick, 1966).
- Among the sound effects accompanying the film, Lynch also used the recorded crying of his infant daughter, Jennifer.
- The nightmare that formed the basis of the plot was taken from real life – a similar dream was had by David Lynch’s wife’s niece.
