Some episodes of the film are borrowed from earlier war films, 'Blue Max' and 'The Red Baron and Brown'.
Despite some inaccuracies, the film is generally considered historically quite accurate. The military airfield, transport, and aircraft appear authentic. The film shows some characteristics typical of the Royal Flying Corps during the war; for example, British pilots were not issued parachutes, and some of them jumped from burning aircraft, preferring to crash rather than burn in the cockpit.
