Short description

A young Irishman flees his home country after a violent confrontation with British forces and travels to the United States under an assumed name. There he is taken in by Tom O'Meara, a New York police officer of Irish descent who believes his guest is simply an immigrant starting over. In reality the man is a member of the IRA and one of Britain's most wanted, sent to arrange the purchase of missiles for the organization's campaign. A genuine friendship forms between the two men, but Tom gradually comes to suspect that his lodger is not who he claims to be. Frankie must then weigh the cause he has served against the peace and safety the O'Meara household has come to represent.

The film was directed by Alan J. Pakula, the eleventh feature in the chronological list of his directing credits, following The Pelican Brief. Harrison Ford plays Tom O'Meara and Brad Pitt plays Rory Devaney, with Margaret Colin, Rubén Blades, Treat Williams and George Hearn among the credited cast. The screenplay is by Kevin Jarre, Vincent Patrick and David Aaron Cohen, and the producers are Lawrence Gordon and Robert F. Colesberry.

Released in March 1997, the film had a budget of 90 million dollars and took 141 million dollars worldwide, a return that leaves little room for profit once marketing and distribution are counted. Audiences rate it 6.2 out of 10 on IMDb from more than 70,000 votes and 6.2 out of 10 on TMDB, while critics gave it 5.3 out of 10 across 41 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Brad Pitt was attacked in Belfast while practicing his accent there for filming.
  • Work on the original script was abandoned, and the screenplay was rewritten at least seven times, to the point where Brad Pitt called the result complete nonsense. He even considered leaving the film's cast, but was threatened with legal action.
