What's left behind the scenes
- The film rights were put up for auction. Among the contenders were Sony and Twentieth Century Fox, but they were won by Universal Pictures.
- Filming began in mid-February 2018. Location shooting took place in May of the same year in Kirkby Lonsdale in Cumbria, northwest England. Filming also took place in Windsor Great Park and on the Menai Suspension Bridge in Wales.
- Robert Downey Jr. borrowed many traits and mannerisms of his character from Dr. William Price (1800-1893), an eccentric Welshman who claimed to understand the language of animals. A monument to Price has been erected in his hometown in Wales.
- While playing Dr. Dolittle, Robert Downey Jr. spoke with a Welsh accent.
- The first film about Dr. Dolittle was not from Twentieth Century Fox.
