Shopping is a British crime drama set in a bleak, anonymous city where young people pass the time by ram-raiding: stealing cars and driving them through shop windows so that others can loot the stores before the police arrive. Billy, newly released from prison, throws himself back into this world alongside his girlfriend Jo, for whom the thrill is everything. Tommy, his rival, treats the same activity as a business, and the competition between the two men escalates as their raids grow bolder and riskier. A local crime boss, Venning, and a rival crew add to the pressure on Billy, who refuses to back down.
The film was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, who also wrote the screenplay, with Jeremy Bolt producing. It is the first of the fourteen films he has directed, followed by Mortal Kombat in 1995. Jude Law plays Billy and Sadie Frost plays Jo; Sean Pertwee appears as Tommy, with Sean Bean as Venning, Fraser James as Be Bop and Marianne Faithfull as Bev among a credited cast of twenty-two.
Shopping was released in December 1994 and runs 105 minutes. Its reputation rests largely on the breakneck driving sequences and its portrait of a generation drawn to destruction for its own sake. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.5 out of 10 from around 3,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.4 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 60 votes.
